-TOKO CLUB EVENTS-
Bamboo craft workshop | Carving a tea scoop/Weaving a bamboo basket

Otawara City in Tochigi Prefecture, along with Oita Prefecture, is one of Japan's leading producers of bamboo crafts.
Founded in 1950, Yagisawa Bamboo Crafts has produced two Living National Treasures and has supported bamboo crafts in Otawara for many years.

This time, we will be welcoming Mr. Tadashi Yagisawa, who has been the head of Yagisawa Bamboo Crafts since 1978, to hold a valuable workshop where you can experience bamboo crafts.
We have two experiences available: carving a tea scoop and making a bamboo basket.

Why not experience the beauty and practicality of bamboo and create something to brighten up your everyday life with your own hands?

[Date]
Sunday, December 15 , 2024

Pottery storehouse "NIKAI" (2 Jonaizaka, Mashiko-cho, Haga-gun, Tochigi Prefecture)

[Event details]

The tea scoop is an essential tool for preparing tea, and is a craft item whose simple shape highlights the natural beauty of bamboo.

In this workshop, you will enjoy the texture of bamboo while carving out a tea scoop with a small knife. Please feel free to name your finished tea scoop.

In the past, tea scoops were made anew for each tea ceremony and were disposed of after use.

In this workshop, you will experience making a tea scoop, a once-in-a-lifetime experience, as was practiced by tea masters of the past, and learn about the culture and history behind it.

2. "Bamboo Basket Weaving" Workshop (Afternoon Session)

[Date and Time]
Sunday, December 15 , 2024
14:00-16:00 (scheduled)

[Participation fee]

6,500 yen (tax included)
(If you participate in both workshops, the price is 12,000 yen including tax.)

[Event details]

To welcome the new year, let's weave a flower basket out of fresh green bamboo to hold flowers during the New Year. Mr. Yagisawa will carefully teach you the basics of cutting and weaving bamboo, so even beginners can participate with confidence. The finished bamboo basket will be a wonderful item that will add a touch of natural warmth to your daily life.
