"Authentic Kintsugi Workshop"
[Genuine lacquer and gold repair]
Kintsugi is a technique of repairing broken pottery by joining it with lacquer, and is a culture unique to Japan.
Ritual vessels repaired with lacquer have also been excavated from Jomon pottery, and the "beauty" of repairing with lacquer and then decorating with gold was born during the tea culture that began in the Muromachi period.
Nowadays, there are various methods of kintsugi, using different materials and techniques.
In this workshop, participants will use genuine lacquer and traditional gold repair techniques to repair vessels over a period of approximately six months.
In the "Authentic Gold Joinery Workshop," you can experience the rare and precious art of gold lacquer repair, taught by lacquer artist Miho Onishi, whose father is Isao Onishi, a Living National Treasure for lacquerware.
This will be a valuable opportunity to experience the essence of lacquer art.
We look forward to your participation.
[Workshop flow]
Participants will repair the vessel they wish to repair using six sessions of Kintsugi (a minimum of six sessions is required to complete the Kintsugi).
The work will vary depending on the condition of the broken vessel, so please bring in two or three pieces of vessel you would like repaired and consult with us.
Kintsugi, which uses genuine lacquer, is completed after a process of filling, applying, polishing, and drying, which takes about six months.
