"Exploring the Serizawa Keisuke Exhibition with Kiyoto Shimodaira"
December 15, 2023 (Friday) 13:00~
Dyeing artist Serizawa Keisuke was the first person in the field of dyeing and weaving to be designated a Living National Treasure in 1956. At the time, stencil dyeing was not recognized as artistic, but Serizawa Keisuke 's world was considered to be unprecedented in its pictorial and artistic qualities, and the term "katae-zome" (stencil dyeing), which combines "e" (picture) with "katazome," was given to Serizawa Keisuke's work.
Shimodaira Kiyoto , who has been working alongside Serizawa in his Kamata workshop for 23 years, celebrated his 88th birthday this year, and now, after 69 years of dyeing experience, continues to work every day in his earthen-floored workshop in Nasu-Shiobara.
This event is part of the "Mashiko Ceramic Art Museum 30th Anniversary: A Day Trip to Mashiko - Traveling Dye Artist Serizawa Keisuke" and will feature works by Serizawa Keisuke, along with valuable stories from Shimodaira, who worked closely with Serizawa.
We look forward to your participation.
[30th Anniversary Commemoration: Mashiko Day Trip with Traveling Dye Artist Serizawa Keisuke]
Known as a dye artist of the Mingei movement, Serizawa Keisuke (1895-1984) loved to travel and traveled all over Japan and the world throughout his life. Many of Serizawa's works depict scenes of handicrafts he witnessed on his travels and the folk crafts made there. In particular, after his stay in Okinawa in 1939, he produced a succession of masterpieces with Okinawan motifs, shifting to a brighter, more generous style. Serizawa also visited Mashiko, and produced a picture book titled "A Day Trip to Mashiko," depicting scenes from the town, including the kilns. This exhibition, with the theme of "travel," will feature works inspired by the scenery and cultural artifacts he encountered on his travels.
In 1976, at the invitation of the French government, the "Serizawa" exhibition was held at the Grand Palais in Paris. The exhibition was well received, and Serizawa was later awarded the French Order of Arts and Letters. This exhibition will also feature works from his travels in France that were featured in the "Serizawa" exhibition. Let's set off on Serizawa Keisuke's journey!
