About the Workshop

You can experience making tiles with Gosoku Ota using the "Tobikanna" technique, which is representative of Koishiwara ware, and "Slipware," which is mainly popular in Europe.
Ota holds exhibitions and workshops in England, the home of slipware.
In addition, the workshop in England is held at Leach Studio (a British studio founded by Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada), where you can experience authentic "flying plane" and "slipware."

The tiles we create will be fired and handed over (or delivered). They can be used as interior decorations or as coasters.
This will be a rare opportunity for visitors from Oishiwara, Fukuoka Prefecture, so we hope you will be able to join us.

-Flying Plane-

Koishiwara ware, produced in Toho Village, Asakura County, Fukuoka Prefecture, has a history of over 350 years. It is widely recognized as folk art pottery, and is particularly known for its "flying plane" and "finger-drawn" designs.
The "flying plane" technique involves using the tip of a plane to create small, regular cuts on the surface of the vessel. Sharp patterns are created wherever the tip of the plane hits, and this unique appearance can be said to be a technique that represents Koishiwara ware.

-Slipware-

This technique has been used in Europe since ancient times and dates back to Mesopotamian civilization. It fell into disuse in modern times, but Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada worked to revive it, and it spread to Japanese folk kilns along with the spread of the Mingei movement.
